Founding CEI Story: From a Blog to a Global Movement
The Circular Economy Institute (CEI) and Circular Economy Club (CEC) began with a simple idea: connect people passionate about circularity and empower them to drive change.
Anna TarÃ’s Vision
While working at the United Nations, Anna Tarà discovered the circular economy and started a blog inviting experts to contribute. In 2012, she founded the Circular Economy Club, hosting informal networking events that quickly gained momentum, with a vision for a club in every city worldwide.
As CEC grew, demand for structured training emerged. In 2017, Anna founded the Circular Economy Institute to provide credible, hands-on education and certification. CEI training has reached over 30 countries, supporting organisations including the United Nations One Planet Network, Harvard School of Design, and London City Council.
Anna’s mission has always been to promote genuine circular practices and prevent dilution through superficial rebranding, helping shape a global movement rooted in authenticity, collaboration, and action.

Real Impact
Drive measurable circular outcomes that benefit both business and planet.
A New Chapter: Joining the CIWM Group
In January 2024, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) acquired CEI and assumed leadership of CEC. Established in 1898, CIWM represents over 7,000 professionals and is the leading professional body for resource and waste management.
CIWM CEO Sarah Poulter commented: “The creation of this group will facilitate the growth of a powerful and respected global community with the scale and resources required to drive meaningful and lasting change.”
Anna Tarà added: “CIWM is a well-respected organisation with deep expertise in training and a highly engaged membership. It will give CEI extra rigour and gravitas.”
What This Means for the Future
CEI and CEC continue to operate autonomously under CIWM’s stewardship, preserving their unique identities. Members benefit from enhanced access to world-class thought leadership, collaborative opportunities, and shared resources.
